(Enjoy making pottery at Snake Kiln, Recollect good old days at Che cheng)

We went to Snake kiln in Shuili to experience making ceramic craft. The entrance fee for student s is NT120.
If you want to experience yourself on how to make ceramic pot, the extra fees would be NT280 while the postage fee is NT150 regardless any area in Taiwan, but for postage abroad it depends on which country you want to send. We don’t want to miss this golden opportunity and once we put on the apron, we are like little ceramic master, using our hands to spin the ceramic soil into our favourite shape. Actually the whole process is not so easy as we thought although the teacher had taught us some basic techniques beforehand. But we enjoy the whole process producing not so good-looking ceramic cups, though we still assume our products as the most perfect one in the world.XDD

After that, we went to visit around the snake kiln area. Looking at this hundred years snake kiln, I can’t imagine it was damaged by 921 earthquake decades ago. But it was at present the kiln being well-preserved in Taiwan. Its shape wriggle like a snake, that’s why we call it snake kiln.

When I arrived in Che cheng,it was like a train theme park. Ancient Che cheng train station was built using precious cypress wood, dark brown building is beautiful and sturdy. The smell of cypress wood fragrance was in the air. This station is the last point of Chichi line.
A whole large area of the park is the Railway Cultural Park which includes a rare steam train adding water station, coaling station, the old locomotive, and others. There is a wood museum which shows the history of checheng and  a timber storage pool.

(Explore Heritage Site---Lugang)

Once reached Changhua train station, we went to fan-shaped train garage first. How to go there? You can ask for a map from the tourist centre at the train station and walk for another 10 minutes to reach the destination. This fan-shaped train garage was among the most important legacy in railway culture. Its railway tracks’ design is to enable the head of train to change its moving direction. It is really rare nowadays. From the watching deck, the garage looks exactly like a stretched fan, special enough to be named as fan-shaped train garage!

We took the Changhua bus and depart to Lugang! We stopped at one of the point and walked to “back car street” based on the leaflet. Suddenly, we saw Lugang Gate which is the only one heritage gate there. This gate actually had one big and small wooden doors, but it is now left with only stone structure. You can see from the picture that there are four words on top of the gate. Old houses with poem are all around us and we are surrounded with ancient atmosphere.

Old street are everywhere in Taiwan, for sure Lugang is not excluded. After you went through Lugang gate, the Yaolin Street is somewhere near. From the right side of the old street, we reached the Assembly Hall where there was a painting exhibition showing different kinds of temple heritage site in Lugang. There were Xinzu Temple and Nanjing Temple around there. As you walk to the left side of the old street, you can find famous Half-side Well. The well was separated by a wall, half inside the house and half outside for the passersby and less-fortunate neighbours to get water supply. I truly touched by the generosity of the rich people which had strengthened the relations between the neighbourhood.

Another special Moru Lane also ignites our curiosity. When we reached there, we were attracted by its narrow space. In ancient moment, when unknown girl and boy pass through this lane together they must be very shy as the space is too small to accommodate two people. As for Jiuqu Lane, the houses were designed in T-shaped and the lanes were curve --- to prevent the effects of September strong wind. The tourists can experience the unique space among the lane.

We really cannot experience deeply Lugang heritage site in one short day. Besides Longshan Temple, we had missed out a lot of other temples like Fengshan Temple, Jinmen Temple, Wenkai Academy, Wenchang Shrine and Martial Temple, Sanshan Guowang Temple and others.(just to name a few)

Spirited Away(千與千尋)

I’m sure, there is no other such beautiful place as the North of Taiwan: Jiufen, Bitou, Longtong, Keelung…
We planned the trip to Keelung since the start of the internship, but managed to do this only on 14th of August. There was all the time some more important activities and places to visit.
But finally we get there even so the weather forecast was not so pleasant beforehand.
It took us long time to get from Fengyuan to Juifen and Bitou – more than four hours. But I forget all my irritation about the long trip first I saw him – crystal blue Pacific Ocean!

He is breathtaking! Fantastic! Amazing!

And the weather was so shiny.
The best day starts.
First of all we visited Longtong Ocean Park where we wanted to dive.

But unfortunately the diving courses started only at 2 p.m. and it was only 12, so we couldn’t wait so long. That’s why we decided just to spend some time on the beach. Actually, it was not a beach as it is – there were only rocks and stones – but there were a place to swim.

For divers only
They also didn't want to wait
I didn’t have a swimming suit but it didn’t stop me, cause it was my only chance to swim in the real ocean! I couldn’t lose it. There was one more reason – the rocks were so hot so I just can’t stand it anymore – I need cool water to cold them! In fact the water was not cool at all, but it was not as hot as the rocks.

It was unforgettable and crazy!
I didn’t notice as almost one hour passed and we needed to go further. And here our adventures starts…
First of all, we missed the bus to the Golden-mine museum. So we need somehow to spend one hour and we decided to walk Bitou trail along the ocean coast! How beautiful it was!

I didn’t see anything as beautiful as these rocks! Graceful and steep, smooth and creek, specked and freaked. It has unimaginable stairs that could appear anywhere and anytime.

We walked fast but we missed our bus again!
And there was next bus only in one hour… And more than fifteen-kilometer way to Jiufen. You will be right if you assume that we decided to walk further.
We spend one hour walking between the road and ocean, under the sun heat. All this time ineffectively we tried to stop the car, wishing to reach Jiufen hitchhiking.

And we managed to do this! We stop a car with a very-very-very kind man, who agreed to lift us to Jiufen exactly!
Have passed the famous serpentine road again, but now upwards, we saw it.

First, we saw them – great crowd of tourists that walk all along Jiufen. No wonder there were so many of them – Jiufen is one of the most attractive places for tourists in Taiwan.

Everyone wants to visit Jiufen
Walking further we saw the Jiufen Old Street itself and I appeared to be in ancient times, far away from the 21st century.
Do you know Hayao Miyazaki and his movie “Spirited Away”?
Jiufen exactly was that place that inspired him. So, get the DVD with “Spirited Away” from your shelf and watch it again to compare the sceneries!
We spent the whole evening wandering around Jiufen Old Street, visiting shops and tasting traditional dishes.
The Old Street at night looks magnificent. Charming aura of eastern mystery is everywhere. I was enchanted by its beauty!

But we needed to return back to our home. While waiting for the bus I found one more breathtaking scenery – the view on the night harbor. I couldn’t stop looking at it – so fantastic it was!

On that day we also didn’t reach Keelung. Bad luck. Well, maybe next time.
